Youth Climbing Program (Ages 12-17 Years)

Youth Climbing Program (Ages 12-17 Years)

Rock climbing and abseiling are activities which provide both physical and mental challenges. This session is specifically for youth aged 12 to 17 years of age.

NOTE: This is an 8-session program run over 8 weeks. You only need to book into the first session of the program, which will automatically enrol you in the entire program. See below for the exact program dates.

If you’re looking for an activity that is new, exciting, and just a little bit different, rock climbing might be just the thing! The fantastic cliffs of South East Queensland offer an incredible opportunity for kids to explore different styles of movement while engaging their natural curiosity. Climbing is an interesting combination of physical and mental challenges, and a route is both a test of skill and a puzzle to be solved.

This program is for participants aged 12-17 years of age.  In this program, participants will be introduced to more advanced climbing techniques and have the opportunity to progress their climbing skills and level. Harder climbs are often selected for students to 'Project' and gain further awareness around advanced techniques.

We love introducing kids to the rocks and watching as they go on to do amazing things. In the sport of climbing, a lifetime of adventure awaits. Why not get started now?

OUR GUIDES

Our awesome guides are highly trained, fully accredited, and heaps of fun! They’ll take care of all the ropes and rigging, as well as providing all the gear - harness, helmet, climbing shoes, and all other safety equipment. Participants  will need a water bottle and snacks, appropriate clothing, and enclosed shoes for getting around the crag.

SAFETY

Belaying is how we keep our friends safe as they climb, and learning this skill is an important part of climbing. At the start of each term, our guides will teach or refresh belaying skills, and everyone will take a competency-based belay test. From then, participants will be able to use our Grigris (assisted braking devices) to belay each other whilst anchored.  The participants in this group will be belaying each other (providing competency is achieved, if competency is not attained a parent will be required to assist with belaying)

LOCATIONS

The Youth Climbing Program runs for the course of a school term. Over 8 weeks, we cover four locations, each with their own distinct environment.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs 5 Sessions
- An unmistakable landmark and a true Brisbane icon, the Kangaroo Point Cliffs offer climbs for all levels of ability. From the first day on the rock to the last day of term, kids are guaranteed to find a route with just the right level of challenge.

Indoor Climbing Gym Climb Brisbane 1 session

- The controlled indoor environment makes it an ideal place for us to work on the finer points of climbing technique - rain, hail or shine!

Mt Ngungun, Glasshouse Mountains 1 session

- Located 60 minutes north of Brisbane, the Glasshouse Mountains are another iconic climbing venue. Ngungun is an unforgettable introduction to climbing adventures in the Australian bush.

White Rock  - Spring Mountain Conservation Estate  1 Session
- Located approximately 40 kms south/west of Brisbane, White Rock is a great sandstone bouldering area.

Please consider whether your family can make the commitment to travel to these venues. Own transport is required for all venues. As stated above, please also be aware that in some cases parents may be needed to assist with belaying.

A Statement of Attainment is issued on successful completion - SISORSC002 Perform vertical rescues

WHAT TO BRING

Whilst all necessary gear is provided, we encourage you to bring your own if you have it – your instructor will check it out and let you know if it’s suitable to use. This is a great opportunity to become familiar with the equipment you will be using in your future adventures!

We recommend every trainee owns the following gear as a minimum:

  • Harness

  • Helmet

  • Locking carabiners (at least 2)

  • Belay device

  • Personal anchor (Sling, PAS or Purcell Prussic)

Don’t know which type to buy? Come on down and chat with our gear gurus in the West End store. Make sure you mention that you’re enrolled on the Vertical Rescue course to score yourself a deal.

As well as the technical equipment, you’ll need a few other things to make the course run smoothly, so make sure you also bring the following:

  • Non-restrictive clothing. Check the weather forecast to get an idea of the conditions.

  • Enclosed footwear such as hiking boots or runners, sturdy enough to handle a rough trail

  • A backpack big enough to carry all the necessary gear

  • 2-3 litres of water, hat, insect repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses

  • Your own food and snacks, full of energy to keep you happy and psyched!

  • A pen and paper

  • Your completed exams

FITNESS REQUIREMENTS

You’ll need a moderate amount of fitness to hike to the summit of Mt Ngungun, an hour walk carrying all the gear you need including ropes, carabiners and personal safety equipment.
